Jakarta 24 Hour Comics Day

Blog EntryNine 24 Hour Comics was made in Jakarta!Oct 7, '06 11:52 PM
for everyone

I know, I know, it's late. We passed the 24 hour deadline (of our Indonesia time) a few hours ago. We started at 7 am on October 7, 2006. But you should understand. We never did it, this is our first time! We started with 5 participants and ended up with 13 participants. Some joined in even after the first 12 hours and made it! The reason why this report was a little bit late is because everybody was really busy helping the 13 comic artists to scan and upload it to the nearest internet shop (since we didn't have an online conection at the venue). It took so much time, not too mention the stay up 24 hours made the IT team (the 'uploader' team) missplaced some files, missed a page, etc. We even still loading our comic pages right now, especially the one finished the 24 pages on time.

It is also the Fast-Month now and most of us are fasting during the event, which was making it even harder not being able to eat or drink (or smoke cigarettes) until the sunset, around 6 pm that day. Then we should also start the fast-time at the same day by having the last supper on 3 am before the sunrise. So we only have 2 meals in 24 hours!

Another excuse was me, who was making a documentary of the event by myself and therefor couldn't leave the venue until the end. I'm a filmmaker and my husband, Beng Rahadian was one of the participants from Akademi Samali. The venue was actually set in our lovely home in the South of Jakarta. Several comic organizations/communities/individuals joined the 24 hour comics day. Journalist from TV private stations, magazines, newspaper and even radio stations came covering the event. One radio stations even came from the very beginning and stayed with us for 24 hours!

We are happy to announce that 9 participants made it. Right now we're uploading it along with 1 participants who finished it after 24 hours and the other 3 who were not finished yet but planned to finished it later. The participant who finished it first was Sigit Pradityo, just seven and a half hours before. The other 2 were be able to finish it around five hours before, while the rest finished it only a few hours before 7 am. Thank you for all of you who came and supported us along the way, especially with all the food you have brought us!

And for everybody else around the world, keep the 24 hour comics spirit alive!

Best Regards from the hot and dry Jakarta!
